PROJECTION


ECOSYSTEM : Enceladus, Saturn’s moon

Context:

The project takes place in a future that perhaps is not as far as one might think; where humans have achieved the skills and means to make long trips in space, carrying passengers, resources, materials and tools, when they are needed. As part of the project’s "projection" the intention is to explore how, not a small colony, but an entire civilisation can be established on another planet, or in this case on Enceladus one of Saturns moons.

Despite its small size Enceladus offers a very large choice concerning the locations to establish oneself. In this case the city is located on the south pole of the satellite which seemed to me to be the most interesting place to do so. The environment around the south pole is the most apt to receive a city; the presence of water geysers is evidence that the ice cover is less thick in this area, giving access to resources such as water, but it is also the area where the least impact from asteroïdes are found.

Concept:

If my concept were to be summarized in one word projection would be the most relevant. The idea behind my intervention is to design a place that embodies a projection of the most characteristic elements of our planet, a way to safeguard our natural and human heritage, and to radiate them elsewhere in the universe.

To achieve this, the project is divided into families.

A large central part of about 500m in diameter hosts the heart of the project. A huge 30-storey building cuts across the entire 5km of ice crust to reach its submarine ocean.

Each floor, is about 220m high, and fulfills an important role in the project's operation. In the central part we can find the 8 main ecosystems or terrestrial biomes, commercial spaces, agricultural zones, storage, health centers; but also underwater research centers to explore the ocean under encirclement ground, and a part dedicated to the exploration of the rest of the universe. This heart is crowned at both ends by domes, the one on the surface accommodates the residential part -this one is characterized by 16 buildings that serve to accommodate the population- spaces to relaxation and sports centers to ensure the wellbeing and good health of people. The underwater sphere is home to the Enceladus Ocean Research Center with a very large submarine port.

All this must of course be connected. The transport in this project is based on sharing, without any personal vehicles, there are as much as it is needed for the inhabitants to move in each sector. The infrastructures make it possible to connect every each part with eachother. Four large Hyperloops ensure vertical circulation between the different zones and electric powered public transport ensures horizontal movements in each zone.
